A Tomie dePaola Celebration!

This afternoon the children shared their writing and illustrations with another Kindergarten class. Mrs. Read's class joined us! The children shared their writing and illustrations with a partner, enjoyed a sweet snack, watched some of our voicethreads and then enjoyed coloring some of Tomie dePaola's coloring pages. Lots of fun!

Exploration Time In Kindergarten!

Exploration time is a great time for children to work together on activities they choose. Many of the children use this time to create and design things together in a collaborative way. I thought that you might enjoy seeing pictures of a city that was built this morning.

Writer's Workshop!

We are finishing up our author study about Tomie dePaola. The children have learned many new features about his books. During our writing time each day the children write about personal experiences, interests, ideas about stories they have heard and other things. Today I am sharing a few pieces of student work to show you what we have been working on. In all 3 pieces of writing you will notice how each child has detailed pictures and or words, along with inventive writing about what they wanted to write. The children are learning how to leave spaces between their words as well as to sound out the words they want to write and write the sounds that they hear to form words. Wow! Wonderful writing!

Dictation Booklets!

Part of our literacy time each day is spent listening to words and writing down the letter of the sound we hear at the beginning, middle and end of words! We also practice writing sight words that we are learning too. Every child will be bringing home their dictation booklet soon to show you the great work they have done!

Pancakes For Breakfast

This morning Miss Post read us another great story by Tomie dePaola. The story did not have any words! We talked about the pictures and how pictures can tell a story. The children noticed that the pictures were in a sequence/special order to help us understand what was happening. Later we were able to illustrate our own stories using white squares.

The Baby Sister!

This morning Miss Post read us another great story by Tommie dePaola. The children then had an opportunity to write about how they would help their baby brother or sister if they had 1. I hope you enjoy listening to our ideas and looking at the awesome writing that the children are doing!

Making Authentic Text To Text Connections!

We are currently doing an author study about a great children's author, Tomie dePaola. The children began sharing connections they had about many of the characters that we read about in a few of Tomie dePaola's books. One of the connections made was how in both stories, Strega Nona and Strega Nona's Magic Lessons was that Anthony, one of the main characters in both stories got himself into trouble because he was being sneaky. The children then went on to share that also in both stories Strega Nona saves the day, but helps Anthony learn an important lesson about being honest.

Guided Reading In Kindergarten!

This week we have started our Guided Reading Groups. Guided Reading is an opportunity to read a story together and talk about what children notice about the story. Some of the things we do in our Guided Reading Groups are; make predictions, talk about vocabulary, make connections about what we see and hear in the story. Guided Reading time is a wonderful time to invite children to explore a text and look closely at it's features as well. Some texts have lots of repetition and children can recognize a pattern. Listen to the video clip for what this looks like and sounds like.

LeapFrog Tag Reading Comes To Kindergarten!

This morning we experimented with our new Tag Pens! Wow! The pens help us learn to read words, letters, and sounds. All we have to do is touch a word with our pen and it tells us the word! We can even have our pen tell us the name and even the sound of any letter we touch on!
The children know how to change the batteries in our tag pens as well as how the battery charger works! Enjoy the pictures and stay tuned for updates about how we are doing!

******* Today your child is coming home with a letter explaining how the Tag Reading Program works. Please read the letter over and email me with any questions or comments you have. Thanks so much!
